TinCaps Game Notes: May 3 @ Quad Cities (Game 26)

Fort Wayne TinCaps (9-16) at Quad Cities River Bandits (13-10)

LHP Logan Allen (2.00) vs. RHP Carson LaRue (0.90)

Wednesday, May 3, 2017— Modern Woodmen Park (Davenport, IA) — First Pitch 7:35 p.m. — Game 26

LAST NIGHT: The TinCaps’ 5-3 lead in the seventh slipped away as the River Bandits scored 6 unanswered runs (half of them unearned) to win, 9-5. Jack Suwinski and Rod Boykin hit home runs for Fort Wayne. G.K. Young and Reinaldo Ilarraza also had RBI hits, while starter Jesse Scholtens allowed only 2 runs in 5 innings pitched.

ROSARIO’S RISE: Eguy Rosario has been on base in 11 of his last 12 games after drawing a walk last night. Rosario now has drawn a walk in 6 consecutive games (with 4 hits also), while only striking out 4 times. Since April 20, Minor League Baseball’s youngest player has slashed .275/.420/.425. (In the 17-year-old’s first 11 games, his line was .186/.239/.256.)

WELCOME BACK: Hudson Potts is starting at third base and batting fifth tonight. The 18-year-old who was the 24th overall pick in last year’s MLB Draft missed the last 4 games after he was hit by a pitch on the wrist last Thursday.

ZUNICA’S POWER & PATIENCE: Brad Zunica has 10 hits this year—4 doubles, 4 home runs, and just 2 singles (1 of which was off the center-field fence and he was out at second base trying to make it a double). So while his AVG is only .208, his on-base percentage is .387, as he’s drawn 14 walks in 15 starts. Zunica has drawn a walk in 22% of his plate appearances (2nd best in the MWL among guys with 60+ PAs). He’s reached base in 12 of his last 13.

“ALOT” OF HITS: Since going hitless in his 2017 TinCaps debut, Alan Garcia has hit safely in 7 consecutive games. The 20-year-old now has 11 hits in 8 games. Last year when Garcia joined the team to start the second half of the season at the age of 19, it took him 19 games to get to 11 hits.

LEAGUE LEADERS: Jack Suwinski is tied for 3rd in the MWL in walks drawn (17)… Brad Zunica is tied for 6th in walks (14)… Eguy Rosario is tied for 7th in doubles (7)… Fernando Tatis Jr. and Reinaldo Ilarraza are tied for 7th in stolen bases (6).

AS A TEAM: The TinCaps have drawn the 2nd most walks (4.1/G) in the MWL and have the 2nd most stolen bases (26).

UH OH: A week ago the TinCaps had the 2nd best fielding percentage in the MWL. They’ve since dropped to 10th, and their 23 unearned runs allowed this season are the 2nd most in the league… Another area for concern: The bullpen, which has a 5.04 ERA on the year. In comparison, Fort Wayne’s starting rotation has a 3.22 ERA… Through the first 5 innings of games this season, the TinCaps have outscored their opponents by 16 runs. But in the 6th-8th, Fort Wayne has been outscored by 47 runs (71-24).
